This is a wonderful story of days gone by, of a time when American virtues mattered. A heartwarming story about the human fallibility within all of us and how we can be so much more when we find out who we really are.
Marion (Jan Michael Vincent), a Marine recruit during World War II is kicked out of the Corps and sent home in a blue fatigue uniform. As recruits sent their civilian clothes home or sold them, the Corps did not wish less than honorably discharged Marine recruits to wear a uniform they had not earned. In real life the Corps issued light blue uniforms; hence the name "Baby Blue Marine" for a failed recruit.
In Los Angeles, he runs into a Marine Raider (Richard Gere) a young, battle-scarred war hero back from the Pacific who has aged beyond his years with prematurely gray hair. As the Raider does not wish to return to the war, he knocks out Marion and changes uniforms with him. When the young failed Marine regains consciousness, he's clad in a hero's uniform. He begins hitching his way toward his home in St. Louis, dreading the prospect of confessing to his folks, but stops for a time in a small town in Colorado where he's mistaken for a hero. He likes the feeling of acceptance and shortly after arriving he falls in love with a waitress, Rose (Glynnis O'Connor); a woman unlike anything he's met before. Meanwhile, as the truth threatens to emerge and bring disgrace raining down destroying what could be a fresh start, several residents of a Japanese internment camp escape. All are put to the test … an enjoyable movie for all.
